When you start a business where you get paid to write articles, you’ll probably face a big surprise!
I sure did. And I’ve seen it happen with most of my students and the writers who write for my team, when they’re just starting out. We all instantly revert to this “writing for school” mode, as if the meanest English teacher you ever had was sitting there, tapping her red pen, waiting for you to hand in your paper. You aim for the biggest, thesaurus-worthy words you can think of. You avoid anything that might make your writing look casual – no contractions, no slang, no I, you, or we to be found.
The goal when you write for school – sounding really intelligent.
Forget all that. Not that you don’t want to write intelligently, but when you get paid to write articles for the Internet, it’s a wholly different task from anything academic.
The goal when you write for the Internet – readability.
Use simple words. Use short sentences. Write the way people speak.
How do you know when you’ve reached that goal?
Two ways:
- You get hate mail from someone who intends to insult, but says, “You write like a fifth grader!” (Got that email once.)
- You can run your writing through a readability index.
