Working as a writer? Looking at a long winter in the business, or something much better?
When I was little, Groundhog Day made no sense to me… I thought the choices were:
- 6 more weeks of winter
- A month and a half left of winter
Ummmmm… same thing, right?!
So, what’s your prediction? What are you doing to make a favorable prediction come true? Or are you stuck in Bill Murray’s kind of Groundhog Day, where nothing in your life changes, you’re repeating the same day over and over?
One of the best things about being a freelance writer is how it’s like driving a little speedboat rather than a huge ocean liner. You can maneuver. You can zip, zig, and zag where you need to to get where you want to be.
One job board not working for you? OK… first step back and give an honest assessment of whether you’ve worked that one long enough, consistently enough, to know it’s not working. Tweak what you can AND choose one more tactic to focus on for a solid couple of months.
Only looking for work on job boards? Those are great for just starting out, but are not typically where you’ll find the best clients (the ones who pay a premium, the ones who are easy to work with, the ones who come to respect you as a crucial part of their success). Start looking around you for better clients! Join a local networking group, build a relationship with a web designer or SEO marketer (my very favorite clients), go to a live marketing event.
My prediction? 2012 will be known as Year of the Freelance Writer
There is so much opportunity. There’s never been a greater need for quality writing – on websites, in article directories, in books (and especially on Kindle, which is a BOOMING business). It’s there just waiting for you!
Need more inspiration? Here’s one of the books that got me to SEE what was possible – Peter Bowerman’s classic “The Well-Fed Writer”.
Here are some other freelance writing related sites that I found for you to browse. Thanks for visiting SAHMWriter.
